How we work
CWToday is an independent local news publication covering Coventry and Warwickshire. These are the practical standards we use when gathering, checking and publishing information.
Sources and verification
We prefer first-hand and primary sources where practical, including police, councils, emergency services, courts, public bodies, organisers and people directly involved in a story. We aim to distinguish confirmed facts from claims, estimates and developing information.
Press releases
Press releases and contributed material are treated as sources, not finished journalism. We may rewrite, shorten, independently check or decline material, and we do not guarantee publication.
Corrections
If we get something materially wrong, we aim to correct it promptly and transparently. Readers can use our corrections page or contact us.
Anonymous and confidential sources
We may protect a source's identity when there is a legitimate public-interest reason to do so. Anonymous claims are treated with additional caution and should be independently corroborated where possible.
Photography and user submissions
We use our own images, supplied images and appropriately licensed material. Credits are included where required. People sending photos or videos to CWToday should only submit material they have the right to share.
AI assistance
We may use software and AI-assisted tools for tasks such as transcription, research support, organisation, formatting and drafting assistance. Editorial responsibility remains with CWToday. Material should still be checked against reliable sources before publication.
Conflicts and commercial influence
Advertising, sponsorship or commercial relationships do not buy favourable editorial coverage. Where a material commercial relationship is relevant to a piece of content, it should be made clear to readers.
