A severe emergency alert has been issued by the UK Government warning that there is a very high risk of wildfires nationally. The alert, sent to mobile phones on Friday evening (14 August), urges residents, landowners and visitors not to undertake any activity that could start a fire. People have specifically been told to avoid disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks while the heightened risk remains. The Government warned that even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire, potentially putting lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk. Anyone who sees signs of a fire should report it immediately by calling 999. Residents are also being advised to follow official updates as conditions develop. The warning applies nationally and comes amid exceptionally dry conditions that can allow grass, heathland and other vegetation to ignite and spread fire quickly. C&W Today will continue to monitor official updates affecting Coventry and Warwickshire.
