A yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Coventry and Warwickshire, with heavy downpours, hail and lightning possible this afternoon and evening. The Met Office warning is in force from midday until 9pm today, Saturday 29 August, and covers Warwickshire and the West Midlands conurbation. Forecasters say an area of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move across the region during the afternoon and early evening, reaching western areas first before moving east. While many places are expected to miss the worst conditions, some locations could see 15 to 25mm of rain in an hour and around 30mm over two to three hours. Hail and lightning are also possible. The Met Office says spray, standing water and hail could make driving conditions more difficult and increase journey times. Flooding of a small number of homes and businesses is also possible, while train delays, lightning damage and short-term disruption to power or other services cannot be ruled out. People travelling across Coventry and Warwickshire this afternoon are advised to check conditions before setting off and keep up to date with the latest forecast. The warning was issued at 9.58am today and is classed as yellow, with the Met Office assessing the event as having a medium likelihood and low impact. CWToday will monitor the situation and update this story if the storms cause significant flooding, road closures or transport disruption across the area.
